"Miss Herschel"
Named after Caroline Herschel, a pioneer astronomer in the 17 and 1800's who worked hand in hand with her famous brother, William Herschel. Of course, as a woman she was given little credit in her time. She was, however, paid for her work by King George III making her the first woman in Britain to receive a salary for scientific work. 10% of the proceeds of this costume will be donated to the Girls STEAM Institute committed to helping girls become leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
I found that steampunk image of that magical dirigible and I've been wanting to create something ever since. I love the burnished copper colors with the deep teal and celestial sky. The base of the costume is hand dyed, painted, and airbrushed with a stencil. The sparkly lines are heat set sequins and won't shed or scratch. I also painted the lace appliqués with metallic paint to give it a weathered look. The center bust panel is copper stretch velvet and I also airbrushed it to give it a hammered, warm look. Sleeves hit just above the elbow.
